Flea, the hardcore, retro platformer from Dundee’s Lowtek Games is OUT NOW on (brace yourselves) NES, Dreamcast and PC (yes, really).
If you missed the Kickstarter, Flea is a challenging retro 2D platformer with an intriguing back story. Play as Henry the Hyperactive Flea who just can’t stop jumping! Navigate assorted hairy beasts and collect blood to get the heart of the problems and fulfil Henry’s life goals of whatever it is that fleas dream about when not a) jumping or b) sucking blood – which it turns out is never!
Ally Low, the brains behind the blood-obsessed beastie, ran a successful Kickstarter campaign earlier this year to create a new physical NES game (Flea). The Campaign was fully-funded in only three days and went on to receive over 200% more than the initial goal, enabling the game to hit even more obscurely obsolete and entirely awesome platforms – including the Dreamcast.
The game has now been shipped to backers and is on sale to you, the gaming public NOW.
One question, that more or less everybody asks, Ally is:
Why the NES?
A few reasons. I grew up playing the NES and always wanted to make a game for it. Then NESmaker came along, it’s a wiziwig-esk NES development software. I had the Flea idea many years before but thought its simple mechanics would be achievable on the NES. There is also a growing community for new retro “homebrew games”, and there have been a few very successful crowdfunding campaigns for these projects. This niche group helped the project stand out among the many other modern games on Kickstarter.
DREAMCAST? REALLY??!
This one might puzzle a few but like the NES community there is also a large Dreamcast homebrew community with new games being released all the time. Unlike the NES, the Dreamcast had an exploit that allowed people to play burned games making it much cheaper and easier to produce essentially a CD over a custom cartridge.
Just to make this even more ridiculously cool, the process of creating a Dreamcast playable NES game has been open sourced by Lowtek Games for everyone to enjoy. It’s called NES to Dreamcast.
The game is OUT NOW for NES, Dreamcast and PC. It’s also coming soon to Evercade, as part of the Indie Heroes Collection 1 compilation (also on an actual cartridge) for the defiantly old school out there.
