Hunted Cow, the Elgin-based games studio behind titles such as Fallen Sword, Eldevin and more recently Warhammer: Chaos & Conquest and Godzilla x Kong: Titan Chasers has been profiled in the Press & Journal.
Highlighting the studio’s growth and success – 21 years old, with a headcount of 43(ish), Hunted Cow has produced browser-based MMO games, published hex-based, turn-based, historically accurate war games on mobile and is now working with some of the world’s leading entertainment companies on Hollywood IP.
Andrew Mulholland, the co-founder and CEO, told the P&J:
Glen [Murphy, co-founder] and I started the business in a little room above Cluny Estate Agents.
The biggest learning curve has been getting the right structure at the company with team leaders. It was important to get the different teams to have people to report to rather than everything coming back onto one person. It has been cool to see the growth over the years.
Hunted Cow is responsible for building Elgin into the UK’s most northerly games cluster. For the last 10 years, the town has hosted the Moray Game Jam, with the University of the Highlands & Islands college campus joining forces with Hunted Cow to host teams a weekend to design and develop new game ideas – in only 48 hours.
Andrew told the P&J how moving away from the big cities has been an attractive feature for many while remaining in the industry.
Despite Elgin being outside Scotland’s central belt a recent job advert for a developer post attracted around 300 applications.
Many people like it up in Elgin, stay and settle down.
Over the years we have had former Elgin pupils returning home to get in the gaming industry after studying and others moving here from elsewhere attracted by the quieter way of life while still working in the industry.
You can (and should) read the whole profile on the Press & Journal website.
