Lucky Frame’s The Nightmare Cooperative, the collaborative, co-operative, collective rogue-like dungeon crawler, is OUT NOW and we’re frankly taking the afternoon off to go and play it.
As we gushed when first we heard about the game, it’s a turn-based rogue-like, with a unique co-operative twist. As you find new player characters in the dungeon, they join your party of bold adventurers and you all begin to move in unison.
As Lucky Frame themselves describe it:
The Nightmare Cooperative is a strategic adventure where you lead a group of unlikely comrades through some rather difficult situations. Your village has fallen on hard times (due to some rather reckless spending by the Village Council) and it’s up to you to bring back some gold. In game design-speak, The Nightmare Cooperative is a roguelike – randomly generated levels means every playthrough will be different, and you’ll always have to start at the beginning, no matter how well (or badly) you did before. Your score is the amount of gold that you pickup during your journey. Opening crates gives you extra gold, but releases more monsters. Meanwhile, you move your whole group using a single set of controls, so each move needs to be considered very carefully indeed. A number of different monsters will meet you along the way. You’ll have to learn their characteristics, and take advantage of your party’s varying powers, to progress along your journey.
Despite being easy to pick up and intuitive, the game features the famous fiendishly-difficult rogue-like difficulty, set as it is, in a dungeon simply bursting with ravening monsters, hungry animals, evil wizards, dastardly traps, glittering treasure and more potions than Mr Merlin’s 7-11 Potionarium And Elixir Yurt.
Previews of the game (yes, they sent out previews, the reckless adventurers that they are!) picked up admiring comments from IndieGames.com, Rock Paper Shotgun and Scottish Games Network.
