Microsoft’s Imagine Cup is a prestigious student based competition, celebrating the best student start-ups across three categories:
- Innovation
- World Citizenship
- Games
Pixel Blimp, formed by students from the University of Abertay, went on to win the regional finals and placed 2nd in the national finals which were held at UCL London in April 2014.
Only one team makes it to the world finals and 2014 was tough, with five of the eleven competitors competing in the Games category.
The day consisted of talks and pitches with Microsoft employees at the team’s booths, as well as a ten minute presentation in front of various judges, from both inside and outside of Microsoft.
At the end of the day the winning team and the runners-up were announced, followed by drinks and a chance to casually network with fellow competitors and Microsoft staff.
Pixel Blimp’s Isaac Howie-Brewerton, told us:
We were very pleased to pick-up 2nd place, having put a lot of hard work into the time leading up to the event; preparing the presentation, documents, and game updates; it felt great to see it pay-off. Most importantly of all though, we loved having the opportunity to show people what we’ve been up to, and we made some great new contacts, and friends, while down in London.
We were the only Scottish team there, and we were incredibly proud to be representing both Scottish students, and the Scottish games industry! As well as showcasing the quality of work that Abertay students can produce.
To round things off, the team was awarded with a whole host of Microsoft goodies for winning their category and coming 2nd overall.
Congratulations Pixel Blimp.
