4J Studios, the Dundee studio behind the console versions of Minecraft, has released the first footage of its new voxel-based Elements Engine – with a distinctly Scottish preview of its incredible capabilities.
The YouTube video takes viewers from the Dundee waterfront and the V&A to the highlands of Scotland – accompanied by Big Country’s seminal ‘In A Big Country’, showing some seriously-impressive world-building capabilities – without the distinctive Minecraft retro ‘block’ aesthetic.
According to 4J Studios:
We’d like to officially reveal the Elements Engine from 4J Studios – our voxel sandbox engine capable of harnessing the power of the latest gaming systems and hardware to create worlds of immense size, at blistering speeds.”
Building Blocks
4J Studios isn’t new to the world of voxels. Since 2011, it’s been instrumental in shaping the Minecraft experience for console players. Its success with Minecraft is undeniable. The console editions consistently topped sales charts and to date the game has sold over 300,000,000 copies worldwide.
4J has also revealed it’s working with two of the world’s leading Minecraft content creators – Stampy and ToyCat, to help spread the word – and help design the first game to use the engine.

Studio CEO Paddy Burns and members of 4J’s technical team will be taking to Discord later today (Thursday 30th May) at 17:00 UK time to reveal more about the Elements Engine and (we hope) answer questions…
