GTA V Scoops BAFTA Best Game Award

The Scottish BAFTA Awards ceremony took place in Glasgow last night. A star-studded crowd on hand to watch the winners accept the famous BAFTA trophies.

James McAvoy (Filth) and Sophie Kennedy Clark (Philomena) won the best actor categories for film, while David Tennant (The Escape Artist) and Shirley Henderson (Southcliffe) picked up the best actor awards for TV.

The night’s big winner was prison drama Starred Up, which walked off with the Best Feature award (beating both Filth and Sunshine On Leith), Best Director (David Mackenzie) and Best Writer (Jonathan Asser).

In the all important games category however, Rockstar North’s Grand Theft Auto V walked away with the 2014 Best Game award. It was nominated alongside Outplay’s Monster Legacy and Firebrand’s Solar Flux, which were chosen from an entry pool of nearly 30 games, making the category one of the most active and contested in the whole competition.

It’s one more well deserved award for the company, who may have to move to larger offices in order to accommodate their growing number of awards and trophies. In 2013 Rockstar North received the BAFTA Scotland Outstanding Contribution award for their astonishing work on the GTA series, while BAFTA recognised the whole company, awarding Rockstar Games a BAFTA Fellowship earlier this year.

It was, to be fair, a tough year for games companies. Both of the other nominated games, Monster Legacy and Solar Flux impressed the judges hugely, but GTA V looks like it will be unstoppable when it comes to awards and recognition over the coming months.
