FLEA!2, the sequel (fleaquel?) to the 2020 smash-hit FLEA! from Dundee indie-darlings LowTek Games is OUT NOW for PC, Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and Dreamcast.
Yes, Dreamcast.
After the success of the original FLEA! – which is a featured title in the National Museum of Scotland’s incredible GAME ON exhibition, LowTek launched a Kickstarter campaign for FLEA!2 on ‘leap day’ – February 29th, which smashed the initial £7,000 goal and went on to raise over £17,000 from 267 backers.
In FLEA!2 Players once again take the role of Henry the Hyperactive Flea who just can’t stop bouncing! Continue your parasitic, perilous, pun-filled pursuits and help the fleadom fighters take down the sinister Flea-o-patra in over 100 levels of beasts, blood and bouncing fun.
Chiptune music maestro Tuï returns for the FLEA!2 soundtrack, offering another slew of 8Bit beats to accompany the game.

We asked Ally Low, the developer behind LowTek games why he was drawn to create versions of the game for NES and Dreamcast…
Why the NES, Ally?
A few reasons. I grew up playing the nes and always wanted to make a game for it. Then NESmaker came along, it’s a wiziwig-esk nes development software. I had the FLEA! idea many years before but thought its simple mechanics would be achievable on the NES. There is also a growing community for new retro homebrew games, and there have been a few very successful crowdfunding campaigns for these projects. This niche group helped the project stand out among the many other modern games on Kickstarter.
And Dreamcast?
This one might puzzle a few but like the NES community there is also a large Dreamcast homebrew community with new games being released all the time. Unlike the NES, the Dreamcast had an exploit that allowed people to play burned games making it much cheaper and easier to produce essentially a CD over a custom cartridge. Lowtek Games commissioned a local programmer Ross Killgarif to modify an open source nes emulator for the dreamcast to auto boot the nes game, it also has a custom vmu image. The process of creating a dreamcast playable nes game has been open-sourced by Lowtek Games for everyone to enjoy.
