Event: InGAME Insights 3

What does the future of play look like? Are we engaging players effectively? How can we ensure the games industry makes the most of its connections with tech and the arts, and strives to be as inclusive as possible?

These kinds of questions are always important in an industry as fast-moving and innovative in the games industry, but they are especially so in a year like this, when the circumstances of how games are produced, released and played has been radically altered.

On November 25, Creative Dundee and InGAME will be inviting three panellists from across the creative sector to discuss these very topics as part of its InGAME Insights events series.

InGAME Insights 3 will bring together digital culture expert Sarah Brin, who is currently senior external producer at Media Molecule; theatre director and founder of the Women of the World Foundation Jude Kelly CBE; and game designer and founding member of Biome Collective, Malath Abbas.

InGAME Insight 3 will be held on Zoom between 19:00-20:30 on Wednesday 25. As with previous events in the bi-monthly series, the panellists will touch upon “creativity, business, access and leadership” in the games sector.

Playing in Public

This edition, however, will put a particular focus on play and games in public spaces, highlighting the challenges public play faces in the current climate. Each of the panellists has extensive experience in public-oriented creative practice, whether that’s play or performance.

Sarah Brin was the executive producer of Meow Wolf Outside, an augmented reality game which took place at SXSW 2018 and incorporated music performances, actors, and a fake conspiracy radio station. She also led a project with Google and the San Francisco Museum of Modern which invited creators to develop Augmented Reality games designed to be played inside the museum, offering players a new way to experience and enjoy the exhibitions.

Jude Kelly, meanwhile, has had a lifelong career in the performing arts, having directed more than 100 productions, and has worked with the likes of Sir Ian McKellan, Patrick Stewart and Dawn French. She founded The Woman of the World Festival in 2010, an international event featuring debates, mentoring sessions and performances.

Malath Abbas has created a number of projects which integrate public spaces into their design. Other, which he created with Quartic Lama, turned Dundee into a playground which players explored using sound. Killbox, on the other hand, is an installation that positions two players face-to-face and either side of a drone strike in an effort to demonstrate the disturbing reality of drone warfare.
