Rockstar North To Be Honoured By BAFTA Scotland

rockstar_northBAFTA Scotland has bent the rules slightly to recognise the incredible achievement of Rockstar North in the design and development of GTA V.

The team will receive a Special Award For Excellence at the 2013 BAFTA Scotland Awards, which takes place in central Glasgow on Sunday 17th of November.

Special awards are normally given to individuals for their contribution to the screen industries, or specific projects.  Rockstar North however will receive the award collectively in a unique recognition of the creation of the largest entertainment release in history.

BAFTA Scotland Awards 2013Alan De Pelette, the acting director of BAFTA Scotland told us:

BAFTA Scotland is delighted to present a Special Award for 2013 to Rockstar North in recognition of the creative excellence and international success of Grand Theft Auto V.    It’s amazing to have such a high end work produced in Scotland and I congratulate all the many talented people involved for their fantastic achievements in making the game a world leader.  BAFTA takes any opportunity to recognise and reward excellence within the Games industry and BAFTA Scotland is proud to be able to honour Rockstar North and Grand Theft Auto V for their achievements in 2013.

Since it was released in mid-September GTA V has broken seven different world records:

  1. Best-selling action-adventure video game in 24 hours
  2. Best-selling video game in 24 hours
  3. Fastest entertainment property to gross $1 billion
  4. Fastest video game to gross $1 billion
  5. Highest grossing video game in 24 hours
  6. Highest revenue generated by an entertainment product in 24 hours
  7. Most viewed trailer for an action-adventure video game

GTA-V-bigWhich makes it all the more impressive that the game was created here in Scotland and has been from the original title back in 1997.

We’re thrilled, delighted and deeply chuffed for the entire Rockstar North team.  We’re also very happy to see one of the creative and cultural organisations in Scotland recognising the achievement of what is without any doubt the largest cultural export Scotland has ever created.

Well done guys.
