067 - Dare - ProtoPlay FBDare to be Digital has announced several speakers from the 2013 festival, including games legend and Life President of Eidos, Ian Livingstone.

The theme for year’s industry conference is independence and convergence culture, looking at where the games industry meets art, film and television.

As a pioneer in the UK games industry, Ian will share his experiences building multiple successful businesses, from an entrepreneur setting up Games Workshop in the 1970s with Steve Jackson, to his success with Tomb Raider and his vision of the future of the games industry.

Ian LivingstoneIan’s talk takes place on Thursday 8th August, the first day of Dare ProtoPlay. Tickets are available now at the Dare to be Digital website.

Ian Livingstone said:

Dare to be Digital is an excellent example of how universities should prepare graduates to work in the games industry, by giving them the opportunity to see a project through from start to finish – and then put it on show to thousands of members of the public.

I’m very pleased to be returning to Dundee to speak at the Dare ProtoPlay conference, share my experiences with the next generation of games entrepreneurs, and meet the other games developers bringing our industry together with the arts, film and television.

Professor Louis Natanson, who leads games education at Abertay University, said:

Having a speaker of Ian’s stature at the Dare ProtoPlay conference will be a fantastic inspiration for all the developers and aspiring entrepreneurs in the audience.

Ian’s achievements are quite incredible, from co-founding Games Workshop and creating genre-defining games, to championing the critical importance of teaching computer science in schools to the future of the UK economy.

We’re delighted to welcome Ian back to Dundee and to Abertay University, and to showing him and thousands of members of the public the incredible games created by students on Dare to be Digital.

Other speakers will explore convergence from different angles including business, creativity, culture, cross-media discoveries and how big companies can converge with independent games developers.
