The government’s proposed tax breaks system for the interactive industry has generally been considered a good thing. The devil, however, is in the details. Many developers are at least partially suspicious that the government will grant tax relief only to meda corporations, or make the process so hideously complex and tied into a spurious sense of ‘Britishness’, that will only fund games based on colonialism, beating oiks, pheasant shooting, druids or knowing your ruddy place!
Games developers – and the wider population – can now have their say on how the process should work. The government has launched a consultation period, in which developers can give their general views, as well as answering a number of specific questions on how the system will be implemented and accessed.
To speed things along, TIGA has created a series of workshops, designed to help developers understand the proposals and to create an industry-wide consensus on how the system should work.
