The 2011 British Academy Awards Scotland were here in central Glasgow last night. Alongside a veritable who’s who of glamorous talent and fabulous celebrities, the awards recognised the best games created in Scotland.
Three companies were nominated for the award. Cohort Studios (for Me Monstar, Hear Me Roar!), Cobra (for iBomber Defense) and Denki (for Quarrel).
The ceremony was hosted by Scottish comedian Kevin Bridges, while the actual games award was introduced by the Scottish Culture Minister Fiona Hyslop – who pointed out the ongoing love and compassion and real tangible support the government has (and will continue to) provide to the games sector. Honest.
The eventual winner was Quarrel. Denki’s Gary Penn and Sean Taylor picked up the trophy (with a fabulous acceptance speech by Mr Penn) and movingly, sincerely and humorously, thanked everyone who’d worked on the game. Ever.
The award is a testament to Denki’s belief in the game, since it was in Limbo for over a year following problems finding a publisher. One (anonymous) company in particular reportedly saying ‘word games don’t sell’.
The 2011 games award received the highest number of entries ever, with 21 developers entering games across almost every single platform. Which points to a bright future for Scotland’s industry, since it’s clearly still taking advantage of the rapid evolution and growth of the global market as a whole.

Congratulations to the Denki team. Commiserations to Cohort and Cobra. Here’s to another great year in Scottish gaming.
