Dare to be Digital 2011 – Open For Entries

The 2011 Dare to be Digital competition is now open for entries.  The competition is open to students from any university or college of art, either complete teams of five, or individuals willing to join a team.

It’s no secret that Scottishgames.net is a HUGE fan of the competition.  It’s a unique opportunity for teams and participants.  It introduces competitors – in a fairly visceral way – to the realities of making games, to time, to a budget and with a huge looming audience at the end of the process.

Dare shouldn’t just be celebrated, praised and WRITTEN ABOUT IN EVERY PUBLICATION.  It should be mandatory for anyone interested in a career in the creative industries.  It’s incredibly useful and a large percentage of participants go on to get jobs within the games world…

This year, Dare has recognised the evolution within the wider games market and is looking at the completed Dare entries as potential releases through one or more of the new digital distribution channels and gaming platforms on the market, such as the iPhone, iPad, Android, netbooks, etc.

According to Elaine Russell, the Dare project manager:

“Like the hugely exciting games industry, Dare to be Digital has stepped up to meet the fast-moving changes in the industry.

“This year we’re looking for exceptional creative game development talent, as well as strong commercial ideas about how the games developed at Abertay University can be taken to market after the competition.”

She added: “Games development is changing at a break-neck pace, with digital distribution channels making self-publishing a serious opportunity for very small teams. As well as the market for mobile phone gaming, there are also tablets, netbooks, handhelds and online distribution channels for PCs and consoles.

“I encourage all applicants to think both creatively and commercially. Dare to be Digital gives students a unique crash-course in team-working and access to personal advice from leading games developers. We’re expecting a large number of applications once again.”

If you’re studying any aspect of the creative industries, software, computing or digital media, we really cannot recommend Dare to be Digital highly enough.  This year moves the competition forward once more and ensures it’s keeping pace with the rapidly evolving games and digital media markets.  Even this year’s entry video moves way beyond the stammering amateur to the slick, good-looking lecturer approach…

You can find all of the requirements, FAQs and an online entry form on the Dare to be Digital website.
